It’s here! So many have asked how I was able to make this textured checkered canvas!
The best part about creating things like this is there are no rules! Go with your gut and see how it turns out! Worst case, you try again.
I started with a 48x36 in. canvas from your local craft store!
Be sure to lay the canvas flat on the ground to check for warping.
I found canvas at Joann's, or Michaels was the cheapest! You can order framed ones from Amazon, but they're pricey.
Next, I measured and taped my border (4in all around) and added my checkered board grid.
I then started with joint compound and some drywall tools.
I picked one with square teeth and a straight edge one for cleaning up access compound that went over the lines. There are a variety of options and "tooth" variations to choose from!
With my grid drawn and the outside borders taped off, I began working on each square- applying the compound right to the canvas and "raking" it with the tools to give it texture.
I rotated directions on each square until complete! Creating a checkered pattern.
I then painted. I played around with a few different ideas here. I knew I wanted something unique but neutral. And that is not always easy ...
I landed on painting the lightest colors with Incredible White (wall color) and Balanced Beige from @sherwinwilliams
And ta-da 🤗
I did also add a frame using trim and my nail gun! I wanted a flush trim, so cutting two pieces the same width as my canvas and the other two pieces the length of my canvas with the two trim pieces attached!
I had no clue what I was doing (as with most aspects of life 😂), but that worked for me!
Sound too easy? It is! I cannot believe how great this project came out! The imperfections make it perfect 🙏🏼
